Hello,

 I’m Joanna Smart, an artist from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. My practice is inspired by my love for colour, pattern and texture. I use these to explore my surroundings as I paint the buildings of Durban, the textiles and things that I collect in my home and the wildflowers and grasses that appear in the green spaces where I live. The materiality of paint is an important aspect to my painting as I am obsessed by the thickness of impasto paint that mimics movement of a grass field and how thin glazing creates depth in a painting of a Namibian doll.
